Introduction
Faculty of Architecture Research Unit (FARU) of University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka are jointly organizing the 10th International research conference on architecture/built environments in Colombo between 08th – 10th December 2017. The conference will provide a forum for researchers, academics, practitioners and students in the areas of architecture, built environment, planning, building economics and integrated design. Authors are invited to submit abstracts written in English within 300 words in areas related to the theme and sub themes of the conference.
Conference host
Faculty of Architecture Research Unit (FARU) of University of Moratuwa will be the main organizer of the conference. National Science Foundation of the Ministry of Science and Technology will be the co-organizer of the conference.
Conference Theme
Architecture (and built environment) provides refuge from the external environments but has a multitude of needs and functions to perform and care. The domain of architecture is thus diverse and includes responses to various needs underlining the essential role research has for the furtherance of and sharing knowledge for the practice and discipline. The impact of architecture as a social product, environmental, contextual and technological entity and economic discipline on quality of life leads to policy relevance, practice and further research. While to a certain extent, these concerns are independent domains of knowledge, they interact together in the design process and performance during occupancy and usage. Architecture thus involves team work and multi-disciplinary (and inter disciplinary) approach for innovation – hence the need to understand the art and science of creating meaningful built environments.
Theme of FARU 2017 recognizes design as a discipline that cares and serves a multitude of concerns and functions through its life cycle within a broader context of built environment involving architecture, town and country planning, building economics and product design. FARU 2017 invites research papers from academics, researchers, students and practitioners from all these disciplines and allied fields.

FARU 2017 highlights the significance of architecture (built environment) in caring environmental, physical, energy, socio-cultural, and economic concerns and needs, and thus the quality of life of people. Annual 10th International Conference of FARU in 2017 invites contributions on research and intellectual developments as well as on innovative case studies in the following areas:

| Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom Sue Roaf is Professor of Architectural Engineering at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. Having spent ten years in Iran and Iraq she completed academic studies on the windcatchers of Yazd, nomadic architecture in Iran, and the ancient water systems, technologies and archaeology of Iraq. She has an international reputation for work on thermal comfort, photovoltaics, passive building design, ecohousing, and the education of architects. She is the author of a number of books on Benchmarks for Sustainable Buildings, Adapting Buildings and Cities for Climate Change and Ecohouse Design. Professor Roaf Chaired the 2nd International Congress on Solar Cities in Oxford 2006. She is an internationally recognised speaker on issues of the environment and buildings and gave the Keynote talks at the ARBS2010 in Sydney and the ASHRAE 2009 Conferences, being the premier HVAC conferences in South East Asia and the USA respectively. Faculty of Construction and Environment, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Professor Geoffrey Shen is the Chair Professor of Construction Management and Associate Dean of Faculty of Construction and Environment of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has a proven record of accomplishment of accomplishment of academic and research leadership in construction management with special interest in sustainable construction supported by information and communication technologies. He has led a large number of research projects with total funding over HK$35 million, and has authored more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed academic journals. He is member of the editorial boards of several leading journals, and has been invited to give keynote presentations in a number of international conferences. He has served the built environment panel of the Research Assessment Exercise in Hong Kong in 2006, and he is the immediate past Chair of the Global Leadership Forum in Construction Engineering and Management Programs.
