ADAPTATION OF MECHANISTIC PAVEMENT ANALYSIS FOR ROAD DESIGNS BASED ON EMPIRICAL DESIGN METHODS
Principal Investigator : Prof. W.K. Mampearachchi, University of Moratuwa
Co – Investigator : Prof. Manjriker Gunaratne, University of South Florida
A mechanistic approach in pavement design focuses on explaining the stresses, strains, and deflections present in a pavement structure. The significant physical causes for such type of phenomena are the material properties of the pavement structure and the pressure exerted on the pavements. A mathematical model is typically utilized to describe the relationship between these phenomena and their physical causes. There are many guidelines given by different organizations such as AASHTO™, AUSTROAD (example: CIRCLY software) etc. for the development of Mechanistic – Empirical methods in pavement designs. Laboratory conditions are mostly used for the derivation of Mechanistic – Empirical methods and calibrations that are required for field conditions. CIRCLY is one of the mechanistic – empirical models developed based on AUSTROAD, widely used in Australia and New Zealand. But ensuring the reliability and accuracy of using software for local roads improved under TRL Road Note 31 and AASHTO guidelines can be identified as a real world challenge.
IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY AND ECONOMY
This research aims on developing a pavement design and a performance evaluation tool in the Sri Lankan development sector, which can be used in future road implementation projects that will be highly appreciated by both contractors and donor agencies of road projects that are in a supply constraint of good materials for construction. This will also be helpful in optimizing the conservative and economical perspective of designs which will reduce material usage and improve available materials to satisfy available designs and evaluate the cost effectiveness of alternative methods that are traditionally rejected due to the expected cost being high.

Modeling of interface bonding of the bituminous pavement layers
Principal Investigator : Prof.W.K.Mampearachchi
INTRODUCTION
Bonding strength of the bituminous pavement layers is one of the most significant functions for durability and functional level of pavements. Generally, tack coat is used as the bonding agent in-between two bituminous layers; (1) wearing course and (2) binder course. Although specifications have provided a range for the rate of application of tack coats, there are some concerns about the application rate and the need of bitumen layer as a bonding agent. There are some advanced test methods and test conditions that have been proposed for the optimization of the tack coat for HMA placement in NCHRP Report 712. Findings of previous research indicate that, application rate of the tack coat, surface roughness and texture of the bonding layers, emulsion breaking time and placing temperature of wearing course, can be identified as the most influential variables. . However, not enough studies are conducted to estimate the performance level of the interface bonding under various conditions. In this study a model will be developed to estimate the performance level of the interface bond.IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY AND THE ECONOMY
A loss of bond between HMA layers can cause crescent-shaped slippage cracks or debonding to occur, leading to reduced pavement life. Those issues certainly affect the road users, especially drivers. The fig 1 and fig 2 below shows the distresses occured in roads due to the poor bonding strength of bituminous layers.
Because many road accidents happen due to the poor conditions of some roads in Sri Lanka, the society losses a number of people and the government losses a huge amount of money in the treatment of those subjected to accidents. Both of them are a loss to the economy of Sri Lanka. Therefore, this research focuses on optimizing the road construction methods..

DEVELOPMENT OF LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIAL FOR INTERNALLY CURING CONCRETE APPLICATIONS IN TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL COUNTRIES
Principal Investigator; prof. W.K Mampearachchi.
INTRODUCTION
Internal curing concrete has emerged as a new construction technology which can be adopted as an alternative solution to the problem of external curing. It is also a practical method of distributing additional water throughout the concrete mixture which is a critical factor in the cement hydration process. This will introduce a fast construction technique for the concrete construction industry because, it eliminates the conventional curing process. Thus, it will save the time, money, resources and labor hours involving the construction process. Internal curing increases the quality and strength of concrete. It can be done using pre-wetted aggregate as internal water reservoirs. However, no research is being conducted yet, to study the suitability of internal curing technology for local road construction industry.
Figure 1 shows the different between conventional curing and the internal curing. According to this we can understand conventional curing is no effective one because it will not provide water throughout the concrete.

IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY AND THE ECONOMY
Through this research, suitability of internal curing concrete for local road construction was studied and the suitable internal curing aggregate has been identified. Study showed that potential of producing these types of aggregates using locally available clay resources. Thus, this study will introduce a new aggregate to the concrete construction industry, replacing a considerable amount of river sand which is presently used in vast quantities and is facing scarcity. Major impact of this study is that external curing of concrete is not required. Use of internally curing aggregate increase the strength and durability of concrete without increasing the cement content in the concrete.

A THEORETICAL PACKING MODEL TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMUM AGGREGATE COMPOSITION IN INTERLOCKING CONCRETE BLOCK PAVERS
Principal Investigator; prof. W.K Mampearachchi.
INTRODUCTION
Development of theoretical particle packing models have been widely discussed through last few decades. Achieving high strength concrete without compromising high amount of cement or binder is the main idea of particle packing models. Researchers have been studying the behavior pattern of aggregate in a mixture to minimize the voids content which needs to be filled with cement so that more compacted, high strength concrete can be achieved through systematically mixing different particle sizes. Toufar model, De larrad models, Standish and Yu model, Kwan and Wong model are some of the main particle packing models used for the normal concrete mixtures. But ICBP manufacturers use a zero-slump concrete. To cast the block a vibration and compaction is also applied. Hence use of above mentioned particle packing models is not suitable for ICBP. Therefore, development of a theoretical packing model suitable for ICBP is a major requirement. The packing model which incorporates compaction and vibration effects will be helpful in manufacturing high quality blocks without applying too much vibration and compaction. Also, the packing model will provide optimum aggregate ratio for the ICBP. Hence material wastage will be minimized which will lead to reduce the cost of manufacturing.
IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY AND THE ECONOMY
ICBP industry is one of the most emerging small industries in Sri Lanka. According to ministry of highways 90% of the rural roads have been paved using ICBP. Hence to cater the demand, a number of local manufacturers have started production factories. But the quality of those products is highly questionable. Block manufacturers use a trial and error process to achieve required strength. This process may lead to high variation of strengths in blocks. Even though the quality of the blocks is assured by SLS 1425 part I and II there are no documents available for block manufacturers to refer to how to achieve the required quality. One of the main problems in Sri Lanka is the variation of quality in paving blocks. Variation of strength of blocks within the same batch is evident. This is mainly due to lack of information and knowledge regarding the production technics of ICBP. Block manufacturers are not aware of mix design practices and methods. Material wastage, High usage of cement, over compaction are some of the related issues faced by manufacturers.
This research will provide proper guidelines for block manufacturers to overcome above mentioned difficulties and produce high quality blocks. The research aims to reduce the block price through reducing the excess material usage. Ultimately the cost of rural road construction using ICBP will be more feasible. Findings of this research will be used to regulate the local block manufacturing industry. Outcomes of this research will be helpful to construct high quality rural roads with lesser cost.

Identification of interconnected voids in an Open Graded Friction Course layer by Digital Image Processing
Principal Investigator : Prof.W.K.Mampearachchi
Open Graded friction course (OGFC) is generally paved as a wearing course to improve road safety through enhancing skid resistance and roadway visibility by reducing hydroplaning, splash, and spray. However, OGFC should be analyzed to improve performance and durability which can be adopted to the selected environment. This research carries out an experimental digital image processing technique to model the interconnected void structure of OGFC of Asphalt concrete (AC) from raw photographs captured through DSLR photography. Cylindrical shaped samples are formed using a Superpave Gyratory Compactor and then subjected to a solidifying liquid insertion process to spot the interconnected porous structure. Cross-sections of OGFC sample sliced by a diamond cutter are photographed and fed with the exact orientations with respect to the cores. Analysis of boundary lines between air voids-bitumen, interconnected voids- bitumen and bitumen-aggregate are carried out for various compositions of OGFC samples. Modeling the 3D structure of interconnected voids via the color of hardened liquid agent will be finally concluded. Image processing tools of MATLABe are made use of in several steps to enhance photographs to achieve the volumetric properties in synchronism with measured volumetric properties in an iterative manner. All the Photographs are enhanced to the same standard with several adjustments implemented in the beginning. The iterative method proposed is carried out in identifying boundaries of air voids-bitumen, interconnected voids- bitumen and aggregate- bitumen through image analysis, edge detection and segmentation to achieve the final separation. Interconnected pores and pore diameters are then estimated for the selected OGFC mixtures through image processing of slices obtained from core samples taking into account the meandering nature of the pores. Finally, requirements for interconnectivity of the pores are established based on permeability measurements of the OGFC mixtures.
IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY AND ECONOMY
When OGFC is developed as an asphalt layer, the requirement of OGFC narrow to achieve a higher performance in roads which consist with specific limits such areas with high rainfall density, less human movements on roads and roads which require high speeds. As the advantages mentioned in the above paragraph, OGFC is suitable for the expressways in high rainfall intensities. OGFC is usually paved as a wearing layer (layer which is at the top). However, the cost of OGFC is usually around 40% higher than regular wearing courses just after the paving stage. When it comes to achieving structural capacity, it’s around 60%. When it comes to the use, OGFC needs higher maintenance than regular roads. But with the right use of OGFC, accidents due to the rain can be reduced and also the speed limits can be increased in wet situations (currently speed limit is below 60 km/h at wet conditions in Sri Lankan Expressways). With the reduction of accidents in expressways, OGFC can use to save money. With the time, OGFC will be more economical than regular asphalt due to less number of accidents. This will increase the safety of passengers and other parties who can became victims of the accidents. Therefore, with the development of world, improving OGFC could be a part of recognizing ways to improve technological development to move forward with the other countries.
