The event was organized by Monash Business School, University of Monash Australia, in partnering with the Joint Apparel Association Forum of Sri Lanka; WMG University of Warwick UK; the University of Moratuwa; the Postgraduate Institute of Management at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura; University of Dhaka; and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

Fashion Design Students’ Collaborative Project with Kelly Felder
Second year students (15th batch) of Fashion Design & Product Development Degree programme developed an office wear collection in collaboration with Kelly Felder which works with a vision to deliver fashion forward designs with international standards. It was a highly successful project which received excellent comments from the consumers.

Phase 2 of this event which was named “Akurata Saviyak” was successfully completed at Pannagula Maha vidyalaya, Awissawella on 7,8 and 7th of October.

Vidya Jothi Professor Emeritus Nimal De Silva, chairman of the national panel of judge board, members of the national panel of judge board Mr. Susira Udalamatta, Deaprtment of Integrated Design, Faculty of Architecture, Dr.Virajini Medagedara Karunaratne and Dr. Gayathri Ranathunga of Department of Textile and Clothing Technology , Faculty of Engineering were awarded recently in appreciation their contribution of knowledge expertise in terms of enhancing design aspect of Arts and Crafts of Sri Lanka. They were awarded at the Presidential awards ceremony organized by the National Craft Council of Sri Lanka , Ministry of Industries and Commerce in parallel to the SAARC regional Arts and Crafts festival and the presidential awards of “Shilpabhimani” on 04th October at the BMICH Colombo.

Fashion Premier League - Annual Cricket Tournament
Fashion Premier League (FPL), Annual Cricket tournament of the Fashion Design Students’ Society (FDSS) of University of Moratuwa was held on 7th August 2017 at the University Ground As the very first event of the FDSS under the new executive committee for 2017/18 The event was started around 9.30am with lightning the elegant oil lamp by the executive members of the FDSS and the batch representatives. Dr. Gayathri Rnathunga, the senior treasurer of the society addressed the gathering and pointed out the value of the event which creates memories for the life.

MOCK INTERVIEWS BY MUTA
An annual tradition in the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology is the conducting of mock interview sessions for the Semester 5 students of the BSc Engineering programme of the Department in order to prepare them for the interviews for selection for industrial training placement. This year’s session was held on May 2 from 6 pm onwards in the Department auditorium. It was organised by the Moratuwa University Textile Association (MUTA), the alumni association of the Department. A team of nearly 20 graduates of the Department led by Thushara Mudalige of the 2000 intake conducted the programme, which also included a briefing session with activities by Samantha Karandagoda, a graduate of the Department now involved in corporate training. The sessions were well received and greatly appreciated by the students.
The annual Texa ‘Padura’ 2017 was held on 27 March. The event was organized by the BSc Engineering students of the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. The talents of the students and staff of the Department were displayed at this event.

The final year students of the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology have taken the lead in organizing a series of charity events by the name Mehewara with the patronage of the Textile Engineering Students’ Society (TESS). These events are a way of giving back to the society what they have received. The event was conducted in two phases. The initial step of conducting a five-day seminar series for students facing the GCE Ordinary Level Examination in December 2016 at the Magallagama Rajabima College was a huge success. The final year undergraduates of the Department conducted the seminars which mainly focused on past paper discussions. The seminar series had the participation of more than 200 students from six schools in the division of Nikaweratiya who were underprivileged in terms of access to good education. As the second undertaking of this initiative, a program to distribute stationery items, library books and sports equipment to students of Thanamalwila Nalanda Secondary School, Monaragala was carried out in December. This school, with only basic facilities, educates 98 students whose families are also in straitened circumstances. TESS distributed school stationery and school bags to all students for the upcoming year while donating new and used books to the school library.

The annual trip of the Textile Engineering Student Society, the most anticipated event in the TESS calendar, took place on 3 and 4 December with the participation of all the four batches of students together with academic staff members. On the first day the participants visited Bopath Ella and Hirikatu Oya, and reached their destination in Diyatalawa after lunch. The participants gathered at the hall before dinner to relax while singing and performing a drama. The next day the group headed towards the Lipton’s Seat and then travelled to Adisham Bungalow before returning to the University

Prof GLD Wickramasinghe of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Vocational Technology from 01 December 2016. Prof Wickramasinghe is a graduate of the first BSc Engineering batch of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology, and the first of its graduates to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of a University. Prior to his appointment he served as Chairman of the Centre for Open & Distance Learning, and was earlier Head of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology.

The Speech Craft Program 2016 was held on 24th August at the Department seminar room. The event was organized by the Moratuwa University Textile Association (MUTA). B Sc Eng (2012) students of the Department participate for this event. Event was sponsored by the Hayleys Fabrics (pvt) Ltd. Event was aimed to improve confidence for diminishing the fear of speaking in front of an audience and developing leadership and organizational skills. Participants would receive training on chairing meetings, conducting meeting sessions, speeche valuation, impromptu speaking and also evaluation of the entire meeting including role players and participants.

INAUGURATION OF MAS AWARD – FD&PD
The inauguration of the MAS Award for the Best Overall Student of the Bachelor of Design – Fashion Design and Product Development of the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology was held on 17 June 2016 in the Department auditorium. MAS Holdings, a leading apparel manufacturing group in Sri Lanka, has already been presenting a similar award for the BSc Engineering programme of the Department since 2007, and the award for the FD&PD programme was obtained by the perseverance of the Head of Department Dr Ujithe Gunasekera.

Dr GLD Wickramasinghe was promoted to Professor
Dr GLD Wickramasinghe was promoted to Professor in Textile Engineering of the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology, University of Moratuwa with effect from May 2015. Prof Wickramasinghe is from the first batch of BSc Engineering graduates of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology and has the distinction of being the first graduate of the Department to become Head of Department (2009-2012) and the first graduate of the Department to be promoted to the grade of Professor.

Dr. EASK Fernando has been promoted to the post of Professor
Dr. EASK Fernando has been promoted to the post of Professor in Textile Engineering (on merit) in the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology with effect from 19 June 2015. Prof Fernando joined the University after completing his MSc in Textile Engineering specialising in textile machinery from the Textile Institute of Ivanovo, Russia, in 1987, and his PhD from the same institute in 1992. He was recruited as a Senior Lecturer in 1993. He served as Head of Department from 2006 to 2009, during which time the Department saw many new developments in terms of infrastructure.

The Art Project -2015
The Department of Textile and Clothing Technology of the University of Moratuwa and AIESEC Colombo South collaboratively organized the Art Project 2015. Six foreign University students from Germany, India and China participated. Five Students from the Batch 14, Fashion Design and Product Development course of the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology also participated as mentors. The project was scheduled for five weeks commenced from 11.12.2015 to 08.01.2016. The programme was set to meet the objective of promoting traditional arts of Sri Lanka with the view to identifying how the traditional arts and crafts that have been embedded in the line of Royal dress during the Kandyan era of Sri Lanka.
The students visited temple of the tooth Kandy, Temple of Degardoruwa, Kandy , National museum, Colombo, Art and Craft village at Battaramulla to generate the knowledge as participant observant with the guidance of resource persons of the project . Furthermore, they experienced the actual methodology of dressing the traditional Kandyan Nilame costume with traditional artisans. The programme was successfully conducted with the support of Dr. U.S.W. Gunasekera the Head, Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. The recourse persons of the project were Dr. Gayathri Ranathunga and Dr. Virajini Karunarathne, Senior Lectures of the Fashion Design and Product Development course at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. Assistance was given by Mr. Prabod Munasinghe, Lecturer, Fashion design and Product development course at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology.

Toastmaster program was organised by MUTA
A Toastmaster program was organised by MUTA for BSc Final year students of the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. The Speechcraft grand finale was held on 26th January 2016 at the Department Auditorium. The special guests who attended the event are distinguished Toastmaster Namini Gunasena, Division Director, Division J, District 82, and Toastmaster Arfath Saleem, District Champion of the International Speech contest and Winner of the Semifinals of the World Championship of Public Speaking who delivered a keynote speech on "Virtues of Winning". Further Toastmasters from IFS, HNB, Moratuwa, and University of Moratuwa clubs also participated in the event.

Mr Prabodh Munashinghe assumed duties as a Lecturer (Probationary)
Mr Prabodh Munashinghe assumed duties as a lecturer (probationary) at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology, Faculty of engineering on 1st of January 2016. He received a Bachelor of Design degree (Honors) with a first class in Fashion Design and Product Development in 2013 from the University of Moratuwa. He had been serving the department as a lecturer (on contract) since June 2014.He has worked at MAS Holdings for nearly two years. Before joining the faculty he worked as a designer at MAS Holdings for one and half years.

Pirith Ceremony and Multi-Faith Religious Ceremony
The calendar year 2015 has come to a closure for us in the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology with a pirith chanting ceremony organized by the Textile Engineers Students Society (TESS) of University of Moratuwa. The pirith ceremony was held on 22nd & 23rd of December 2015 followed by an alms giving ceremony for the Maha Sanga, in the next day. It was held with the objective of invoking blessings of the noble triple gem for the academic staff, non-academic staff as well as the students on the eve of the year 2015 and also to make punyanumodana to the two brothers Amilthan Mahendran and Neethirajah Karoshanath of Textile family who had passed away in a tragic accident recently. We were honored by the presence of the Head of the Department Dr. U.S.W. Gunasekara, for the pirith ceremony.

The Evo.Lution 2015 held at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology , organized by the Fashion design students' society came to a conclusion with praises and exclamation of job well done where Months of hard work and dedication had paid off with immense satisfaction. The event took place in 3rd and 4th of December includes four levels of academic work following office wear inspired from 80's fashion, casual wear, shaper wear inspired from Victorian Era and hand loom fabrications inspired from Kandyan Era traditional crafts.

A & E Award is offered annually for the Best Industrial Trainee of the Textile Engineering degree program and sponsored by American & Efird Lanka ( Pvt) Ltd. The selection is based on the student's academic performance and also the performance during the industrial training period. Winner of the year 2015 is M.D .Janith Dushantha who receives a cash price of Rs. 75,000.

The focus of the assessing activities carried out such as individual presentations, negotiation table, group juggle, bridge, and toxic waste, was to assess soft skills of students such as leadership, communication, teamwork, innovativeness.

MAS Award Ceremony 2015
MAS award ceremony 2015 was held in the Water's Edge on 29th October 2015. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Head of the Department and staff members of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology were invited for the occasion. Started in 2008, the 'best overall student' of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology is recognized and awarded annually by MAS Holdings (Pvt) Ltd. The evaluation is based on the students' academic performance, participation for extracurricular activities and the short-term project work conducted at MAS Holdings. Winner of the MAS Award 2015 was I.H. Buthsara Kaushalya, who received Rs.100,000/= cash price. First runner-up M.D. Janith Dushyantha, Second runner up M.D Ishan Chathuranga and other two participants H.A Malaka Perera and A.L. Ishan Melantha were awarded with certificates.

It was the primary intention of the Department to allow the students to understand their existing level of performance and the expectations of the employers, so that they could identify the areas of improvement and initiate necessary action to bridge the deficiencies and make themselves employable, marketable and competitive in the arena of employment, by the time they graduate in another Two years time. The event would be followed by a feedback session during which the students would be given a personalized feedback about their personality and skills along with an individualized development plan.

Exploring Lion’s Kingdom; Outdoor Academic Workshop for B.Des Year 01 Students
An outdoor academic workshop was conducted at Sinharaja Rainforest for B.Des Level 01 undergraduates of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology, University of Moratuwa on 2nd and 3rd of September 2015. The key objective of this project was to enrich the knowledge and understanding of students design development process based upon nature related concepts. Students were asked to explore interesting organic objects of Sinharaja forest and identify their design opportunities to further develop. This novel learning experience has enabled students to embrace the natural beauty and translate its potentials to create both 2D and 3D forms in art and design by exploring major design elements such as line, shape, form, colours.

Second session of “Your Life.. Your Future” programme was held on 23rd September 2015 at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. It was conducted by Mr Thushara Mudalige, Deputy General Manager, and technical MAS Intimates. This programme is designed to motivate undergraduate students of fashion design and product development degree course to set up their future goals with clear understanding about industry opportunities and demands. Promotion to Senior Lecturer
Mrs. Rivini Matararachchi attached to the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology has been promoted to the post of senior lecturer Grade II. She has completed her PhD from the University of Moratuwa. Her study on “Enabling the transition from product provider to service provider; An empirical investigation in the apparel industry ” was supervised by Professor Janet Godsell and Dr Dharmasri Wickramasinghe.

Industry Collaborations
Inaugural session of “Your Life.. Your Future” programme was held on 20th august 2015 at the Auditorium of Textile Department. This programme is designed to motivate undergraduate students of fashion design and product development degree course to set up their future goals with clear understanding about industry opportunities and demands. Ten of the past graduates, industry professionals and inspirational personalities from 2008 batch was invited to conduct this programme. This batch is having 100% employment rates as well as they have wide variety of people who are contributing their design capabilities in different sectors such as Fashion Designing, Fashion Marketing, Merchandising, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Foot wear industry.. Etc. Some of them are working with foreign employers for high salary scales too.

An outbound training program(OBT) for BSC Final year students
An outbound training program(OBT) for BSC Final year students of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology, University of Moratuwa was conducted by Borderlands Lanka (Pvt) Ltd in 30th and 31st Jult 2015 at Kithulgala. Participants got the opportunity to partake in white water rafting in Kelani River, canyoning and jungle hiking. The main focus of the adventurous activities was to develop leadership, team working and self-confidence to overcome fear and conquer challenges of the corporate world that they are about to step into. While acquiring the soft skills, students did not forget to enjoy the cool breeze of ‘Kelani River’ and unique experience of the camping night. At the end of the program, was a debriefing in which the learning of the program was shared amongst the team.

Farewell Lunch and DYI lab opening
A farewell lunch was organised on 21st May to appreciate former head of the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology Dr. W. D. G. Lanarolle to appreciate his diligent service over the past three years. Also a new lab named DYI (Do It Yourself) lab was opened.Basic intension of development of this laboratory to provide hands on experience on design projects done under module TT 1963 Engineering Skill Development . It will be further used in conducting laboratory classes in TT 3262 Instrumentation and Programming for Automation module. DIY laboratory basically comprising of two segments namely electronic work space and mechanical workshop. Electronic work space has two work benches facilitating four stations to work. It also equipped with electronic multi-meters, storage oscilloscopes, signal generators, DC regulated power supply, computer workstation equipped with simulation software (multisim), toolkits and furniture. Mechanical workshop equipped with a lathe machine, heavy duty work bench with a vice, an angle grinder, bench drilling machine, portable drilling equipment and many other gigs and tools. Depending on the necessity of the students, the laboratory is planned to be open for the students after hours.

Winners of the Group event of the Chokolaate Mother & Daughter Competition 2015
K.M.Sachethani Ruwandika, Piumi Senevirathna, Samitha Dinanjali, Suhani Maheepala Udani Randima, five third year students form Bachelor of Design Degree have won the Group Event of the Chokolaate Mother & Daughter Competition- 2015.Their collection titled ‘Bold Sprits’ was inspired from the romantic, colourful, cheerful and sparkling Paris night around the Eiffel Tower. In developing the range they have followed the Eiffel structure sparkled by the elegant fireworks. Both woven and knitted materials were used in the collection. Value additions were sublimation prints, appliques and Iron structures. The event was held on 23rd of May 2015 at Colombo.

CFW Day 2015
Colombo Fashion Week has held their CFW Day successfully on 11th May 2015 at the department of textile and clothing technology as part of its ongoing Designer Development Programme, which aims to nurture the next generation of fashion talent in Sri Lanka. A great turnout of fashion design students from level1, 2 and 4 was able to engage with the CFW team, senior designers and PR partners. The CFW Day participants were able to gain valuable insight into CFW’s work and the fashion industry, and explore different opportunities that are available to them through CFW’s design and retail initiatives.

Opening of the new Learning Resource Centre
The newly established students’ resource centre which was funded by QIG grant at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology was declared open by Prof U. G. A. Puswewala on 6th April 2015 It is equipped with modern multimedia facilities, internet, journals and magazines which are related to the textile and fashion industry, and furnished with discussion spaces. In the long run it is expected to produce audio and video teaching materials related to the modules taught at the department therefore students are expected to use them leisurely. One of the objective of this is to encourage self-directed leaning when the department is focusing on implementing Outcome Based Education system.

Visit By Professor Sally Wade
Director of Sheffield Institute of Arts, Prof Sally Wade, made a visit to the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology on December 10. She delivered an inspiring presentation to the staff and students. She also had a constructive discussion with the staff especially about the future directions of design education, importance of teaching contextual studies to the design students and the importance of knowledge sharing.

Attitude Building Workshops
The Department of Textile & Clothing Technology organized two attitude building workshops for Semester 02 and Semester 08 students on December 03 and 12, with the intention of planting positive attitudes into their lives so that they could invigorate their behaviours to reach greater heights in both academic and personal endeavours. The workshops were conducted by a professional in the field of attitude building who succeeded in arousing the thoughts of the students and let them understand the importance of their lives to themselves and to the rest of the world through a session of interactive discussions. Positive inputs were given to the students that would be useful in setting their future goals of life, formulating strategies and shaping their behaviours in accomplishing the goals.

Outbound Training At Kithulgala
Two outbound training programmes for Semester 04 and Semester 08 students of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology were conducted by Borderlands Lanka (Pvt) Ltd in December 2014 at Kithulgala. Participants in the programmes got the opportunity to partake in white water rafting in the Kelani River, canyoning and jungle hiking. The main focus of the adventure activities was to develop leadership, team working and self confidence to overcome fear and conquer challenges of the corporate world that they are about to step into. While acquiring the soft skills, students did not forget to enjoy the cool breeze of the Kelani River and the unique experience of the camping night. At the end of the programme was a debriefing in which the learning of the programme was shared amongst the team.

Mentoring Programme – Annual Forum Of 12’ Batch And Programme Launch For 13’ Batch
The inauguration ceremony of the Mentoring Programme to develop skills and attitudes of students organised by the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology under the QIG of the HETC project was held on December 03 at the Department Auditorium. The ceremony was graced by the Head of Department, activity coordinator, mentors from the industry and staff members. The beneficiaries of this programme are the undergraduates of the 2013 intake of the Textile Department. This was the second mentoring programme launched under QIG. Prior to the inauguration ceremony, a Train-the-Trainee programme had been conducted for mentors. During the inauguration session, the programme structure and guidelines were communicated to students by a mentor of the first programme. A mentoring booklet was also distributed to update the mentoring activities and progress of mentees. Following the launch was the annual mentors’ forum of the 2012 intake, during which the mentors andmentees shared their experiences of the programme with the intention of bringing about further improvements to the programme. At the close of the ceremony the Head of Department, Dr W D G Lanarolle, appreciated the unconditional commitment of mentors towards the programme and also presented honoraria.

Mas Awards 2014
MAS holdings have partnered with universities in Sri Lanka to recognize and support academic excellence and promote overall development to ensure young graduates are moulded into well-rounded individuals through the Best Overall Student Award. This year five final year BSc Engineering – Textile & Clothing Technology students of the 2010 intake were shortlisted by the Department based on their academic performance and all other capabilities. These shortlisted students then received a short-term training from MAS Holdings and were each given a month-long industry-based project to complete. Based on the success of their projects and the marks received during the entire process the winners were selected. Nishadi Perera became the first female student to win the MAS Award in the history of the award at Moratuwa. The First Runner-up was Ruwini Chathurangi, and the Second Runner-up Shiran Perera. They received their awards together with the winners from other universities at a colourful ceremony held at Water’s Edge.

A Workshop On Tuka
A one day workshop was organized for undergraduate students by the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology on November 28 on Tuka, which is one of the CAD/ CAM solutions used in the Sri Lankan apparel industry. New software solutions which can be used for fashion designers and product developers in the apparel product development industry were demonstrated.

Personal Effectiveness Enhancing Workshop For Non-Academic Staff
A one day workshop was held on November 14 for the non-academic staff members of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology. It was conducted by the famous motivational speaker Mr Mohan Palliyaguru. 21 non-academic staff members have been participated to this workshop.

A Training Programme On Natural Dyes
Several staff members and students from Department of Textile and Clothing Technology participated to a training programme on the “Exploration of Newer Natural Dyes to the Sri Lankan Textile Industry.” It was held from November 10-14 at Textured Jersey Lanka (Pvt) Ltd Avissawella. This workshop was conducted by Dr Padma S Vankar from the Facility for Ecological & Analytical Testing (FEAT) Laboratory, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India.

Inauguration Of Bsc Engineering, Bsc Tlm & Bdes (Fd&Pd) 2014
The Inauguration Ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering, 2014 Intake was held at the Civil Engineering Auditorium in three sessions on November 03 and 04. A parallel programme was held at the old Gymnasium for the parents. Around 900 students have been admitted to the three degree programmes conducted by the Faculty.

New ERU Logo
The ERU decided to change its existing logo and a competition to select a new logo was held in the month of September among students as well as academic staff members. The logo designed by Mr Sumith Gopura of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology (shown below) was selected as the most suitable design for the logo of the ERU.
Best Designer at the Serenade Fashion Show 2014
Samitha Dissanayake, a third year undergraduate of the Fashion Design and Product Development Degree course of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology won the title of Best Designer 2014 at the Serenade Fashion Show 2014 held on 4 October at the Taj Samudra Hotel.
