The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa plays a leading role in preparing professionals to meet the diverse and complex demands of the field, including structural, water resources, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, and construction management. With a strong focus on both local and global challenges, the department offers a comprehensive educational experience that equips students with the knowledge and skills to become future leaders in the profession.
The BSc Eng (Hons) in Civil Engineering program, offered since 1972, is one of the most respected in Sri Lanka, having produced over 4,600 graduates to date. The curriculum, spread over eight semesters, is continuously updated to reflect the evolving needs of the profession and the global engineering landscape. It provides a solid foundation across all major areas of civil engineering, while also allowing students to specialize in a chosen sub-discipline. This ensures a balanced education, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience, and fostering the critical thinking and technical skills required of highly competent civil engineers.
The program is accredited under the Washington Accord, ensuring that it meets internationally recognized standards in engineering education and opening global career opportunities for graduates.
Currently, the department accommodates over 500 undergraduate students, with 125 in each academic cohort, and more than 250 postgraduate students engaged in full-time and part-time studies across various civil engineering disciplines. While the BSc Eng (Hons) in Civil Engineering remains our flagship program, we also offer a wide range of postgraduate degrees, providing advanced knowledge in specialized areas. Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs further strengthen ties with industry, ensuring our students stay informed and connected to the latest advancements in the field.
